Our Story

Handcrafted in Austin, sourced the world over.

Zafu Studio began with a single cushion, a borrowed sewing machine, and the idea that the thing you sit on to be still should itself be made slowly.

The Indigo Bloom meditation cushion in a quiet Austin studio space

We make meditation cushions — zafus — one at a time in a small Austin workshop. Every cushion is cut, sewn, and filled by hand, then checked by the person who made it. We don't run big production lines, and we don't pretend to: we make in limited runs so we can keep our hands on the work.

Heritage textiles, honestly sourced

Our fabrics come from small workshops we know by name. The Mashru Stripe is loomed on pit looms in Patan, Gujarat; the Indigo Bloom and Bagh Medallion are block-printed in Jaipur and Bagh with carved teak blocks pressed one motif at a time; and the Dancing Zebra is hand-screened in a small Nairobi workshop. Because the cloth is made by hand, no two cushions are identical — the slight shifts in colour and print are the signature of the maker, not a flaw.

Why buckwheat

Each cushion is filled with organic buckwheat hulls. They shift to support your posture, hold a stable seat that won't flatten under you, and breathe so the cushion stays cool through a long sit. If you like a lower seat, pour a handful out through the hidden zip until it feels right.

Made to be used

A cushion should earn its place in your practice. Ours ship free across the US, arrive within a few days from Austin, and come with thirty days to sit with them. If a cushion isn't right for you, send it back — no fuss.
