Care & Questions
Living with your cushion
A buckwheat zafu asks for very little. Here's how to keep yours comfortable for years, plus answers to the questions we hear most.
Common questions
How do I care for my buckwheat cushion?
Spot-clean the cover with a damp cloth and mild soap, and keep the buckwheat hull fill dry. The cover has a hidden zip, so you can pour the hulls into a bowl before a deeper clean and refill once everything is dry.
What is buckwheat hull fill, and why use it?
Buckwheat hulls are the cleaned outer shells of the buckwheat seed. They shift to support your posture, hold a stable seat that doesn't flatten over time, and breathe well so the cushion stays cool through a long sit.
What size zafu should I choose?
Each cushion is 14 inches across and 6 inches tall, a comfortable height for most adult sitters. If you have longer legs or tighter hips, sit toward the front edge to tilt the pelvis gently forward.
How firm are the cushions?
Firm and supportive rather than soft — buckwheat holds its shape under you. If you prefer a lower, softer seat, remove a handful of hulls through the zip until it feels right.
